University of Florida

It's the Sunshine state's top university. According to the highly respected Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings, it comes 46th in the US and 180th in the world.

The university's high ranking is largely thanks to its top quality, and quantity, of research. It has over 150 research institutes and centers.

Competition is fierce to get accepted for a place in one of the university's 100 undergraduate and 200 graduate degree courses. Only about half of all applicants are admitted.

The University of Florida campus is huge, accommodating about 50,000 students, including 16,000 postgraduates, in nearly 90 schools. It is the eighth-largest single-campus university in the US. The university is one of the most popular in the US for international students with an enrollment that takes in more than 130 countries.

University of Miami

Ranked 61st in the US, The University of Miami is a private university with a relatively small student body of just under 17,000. The university has 166 undergraduate, 105 masters, and 63 doctoral programs. Students attend one of 12 schools and three graduate schools: The Graduate School, the University of Miami School of Law and the Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine. The university is close to the ocean and long sandy beaches. It also enjoys a popular reputation due to its nearness to Miami's exciting nightlife and energetic arts scene. Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University

This is the world's biggest aerospace and aviation university with over 30,000 students in the US and across the world. Popularly known as "the Harvard of the Sky", the university has close ties to the US military. Originally founded in Daytona as 1925 as a flight training school, it has expanded to another main campus in Prescott, Arizona and more than 130 facilities across the world. Over 90 of these are on military bases.

As well as offering flight training and mechanics courses, the university also boasts associate, bachelor, master's, and Ph.D. degree programs in subjects as wide ranging as Human Factors Psychology, Safety Science, Business, Engineering, and Security & Intelligence.

Florida State University

Located in Tallahassee, this is a large public research university. With just over 41,400 students, the university offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses in a just about every subject there is. It is ranked 80th in the US, according to QS.

University of South Florida

This university is one of the few in the US to have received a gold rating from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education ( In using it $1.6 billion annual budget wisely, the University "meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs", according to AASHE. The university is ranked 97th in the US and is in the top 550 in the world.

The university offers more than 230 degree programs to over 48,000 students.

University of Central Florida

It is home to the second largest number of students in the US. There are over 61,000 students both domestic and from more than 148 different countries. The university's 13 colleges offer 210 degree programs across a wide range of subjects. It is in Orlando – home to Disney World.

As the most southern state in the US, Florida is close to the Caribbean and Latin America. It has a rich and diverse cultural mix and the state's cities have a thriving arts, music and entertainment scene second to none.
